Description
This was my first project. I was backpacking through New Zealand and landed a job with Hanmer Springs Adventure Centre as a quad bike guide instructor. My employer at the time asked me if I could draw some plans for an extension to the existing shop which was a bus station originally, keen for any experience at all I jumped at the chance. The design was originally for a kiosk/saloon style structure to sell ice creams but ended up as studio space for a local business.
When I presented the first draft plans they were very happy and wished to proceed to get building approval from the local council. I engaged with a local builder for consultation regarding typical details, & New Zealand regulations for timber frame structures. In between working as a Quad Bike guide, I managed to put together a full set of drawings which got local council approval after a few amendments regarding disability access.
My employer was happy to begin construction. I resigned as a Quad Bike guide instructor so I could get my hands dirty and help out with construction. The project took just 3.5 weeks to complete.
I was very happy and felt very lucky to have been involved from day one on this project. Although this project was small in scale I still had to comply with local council requirements & building regulations which was a great experience in the end.
